Today was a “short” day - only 54 miles. Funny how your perspective can shift, and suddenly 54 miles becomes a SHORT ride. Anyway, as a result of today’s relatively modest distance, our ride didn’t start until just after 9am, as opposed to our more usual 7am. Whatever the reason, I gladly took the extra sleep.
During our briefing this morning, we found out that one of our riders, David (whose daughter was visiting and came for the ride with us), had arranged for a tour of the Hoosier Gym in Knightstown for us. Although I have not (yet) seen the movie, it was still a nice treat.
When we headed out as a group, I guess the rest of the group couldn’t wait to see the gym, because they took off like a bat out of hell! I managed to keep up for a LITTLE while, but I eventually let them all take off up the road. Good thing, too - they were quickly out of sight, and despite this my average speed from the start to the gym was STILL over 16 mph!
On the way to the Hoosier Gym, we rode along Hwy 40, which at times was truly a highway and at other times was a country road.
At first, I was a little worried that I would miss the gym on account of how far I had fallen back. David had told us before the ride how to find the gym, but I had forgotten. As luck would have it though, Knightstown had the location of the gym well-marked. Although I have not yet seen the movie, it was still a really cool place to stop.
By the way, the road we traveled today, Route 40, is also known as the National Road.
As has become my practice, when I get to the town that we’re staying in I usually find a convenience store to pick up a sandwich and some chocolate milk to begin to refuel from the day’s ride. Another member of our group suggested a particular coffee shop in town, so a group of us met up for lunch.
Of course, my blog post would not be complete without a link to the day’s video:
My apologies for the double picture - I liked the above picture so much that I used it as the thumbnail for the day’s video. By the way, tomorrow starts off the final four days before the final rest day, all of which are 90 plus miles in length, starting with a century ride of approximately 105.1 miles with an expected 2,183 feet of elevation gain.
Well, that’s all for today - see you tomorrow!
