Day 35: Crawfordsville, IN to Greenfield, IN

Distance: 74.30 miles

Elevation gain: 1,122 feet

Avg speed: 16.7 mph

Max speed: 31.3 mph

Moving time: 4:26:57

Today was another really good day. This was two days in a row of enjoyable, relaxing rides. The terrain did not pose much of a challenge, but the area we rode through was beautiful. Not Arizona or New Mexico beautiful, but still beautiful in its own way. Cute small towns and picturesque farmland. And perhaps the best part of all - it looks like we might be done with the cicadas!

As you know from reading my blog, my son Zach stopped by to visit us in Crawfordsville, and he stayed over until this morning to see us off - even making a cameo appearance in the intro to today’s video! For today’s ride, we all started as one big happy group (as opposed to an early group and a late group). Once we headed out, we eventually fell into our respective paces and our respective groups as we made our way through the farmland and small towns of rural Indiana. Eventually, we approached Indianapolis.

A pond I saw while heading into Indianapolis. It was after taking this picture that I forgot to restart my camera, causing me to miss about 5 miles of my journey.

Indianapolis has some quite nice bike paths, which we got to take advantage of. (I find them quite preferable to riding the shoulder of the Interstate, dodging the debris from steel-belted radial tires that came apart on the road.) Eventually, the bike path we were on took us to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, along with its museums and its interesting sculptures.

Next on our agenda was a trip around Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, where some sort of street fair was going on, complete with “free” donuts being given away by the Salvation Army. Free is in quotes because I (and most if not all of our group) did make a donation to them.

After passing through Monument Circle, we made our way through and around some road construction to our second SAG stop before continuing east along the Pennsy Trail, which eventually led us out of the city and close to our destination. I made a nice long lunch stop along the way, and was STILL at the hotel before 2pm! (Thankfully, our rooms were ready upon our arrival.)

For dinner tonight, we had a pizza party. The pizza wasn’t too bad, and was much appreciated - especially since bringing pizza in resulted in us NOT having to eat at Cracker Barrel for three consecutive nights!

Anyway, as I’m sure you have come to expect by now, of COURSE I have a video of today’s ride:

Tomorrow we get to sleep in, as we are not leaving until 9am. The reason for this is we have a fairly short ride on the agenda for tomorrow - only 53 miles to Richmond! See you then!
