Today’s ride was one of the most BRUTAL I’ve ever encountered. We had that famous Kansas wind today, only it wasn’t at our backs. (Had it been, that would have been SO nice!) Tomorrow looks to be EQUALLY windy, only for tomorrow it looks like it will be a direct crosswind for the most part.
The wind today was out of the north. As luck would have it, we headed northeast for most of today’s route, which meant a quartering headwind from the left. And when we weren’t headed northeast, we were headed north, straight into the wind!
Our first (and only) SAG stop for today was in Meade, KS, at the site of the famous (or infamous) Dalton Gang Hideout. Although I’m not much of a history buff, apparently the Dalton gang began their crime spree stealing horses, eventually escalated to robbing trains before finally venturing into bank robbery. (Sounds like the plot of an old Western movie. Probably is.) Anyway, what finally did them in was they attempted to rob two banks simultaneously, and most of the gang were killed during the robbery. Emmett Dalton survived but was badly injured. He was captured, tried, and sentenced to life in prison for his crimes, though he only ended up serving fourteen and a half years of that sentence before being pardoned.
Along the way somewhere, I saw a marker regarding the Lone Tree incident, and passed miles and miles of wind farms.
As I mentioned in the video, when I pulled into Dodge City I made a new friend of the canine variety:
And, as usual, my blog post for a riding day would not be complete without a link to the day’s video:
Tomorrow, after getting out of Dodge we will be heading to Great Bend. Just a few more rides until our next rest day! Speaking of rest, that is my cue - have a good night and I’ll see you tomorrow!
