Today was a pretty short ride, and an easy one at that, but the day ended up being really fun and rewarding! Our first stop on today’s journey was in a town called Hooker, OK. Although the town name has nothing to do with prostitution (it’s actually named for John “Hooker” Threlkeld, who earned his nickname by being an outstanding roper of cattle, back in the 1800’s), they do have a lot of fun these days with the town name, as is evidenced by these pictures:
After leaving Hooker, it was only another 15 miles or so to our 5th state line crossing as we entered our 6th state, Kansas.
Once we entered Kansas, we soon came upon the town of Liberal, our overnight stop for today. Liberal is known for being the location of Dorothy’s House and the Land of Oz, a tribute to the famous movie The Wizard of Oz.
After visiting Dorothy’s house, it was time to continue up the road to the Mid-America Air Museum, which I thought was incredible! Pardon the massive photo dump, but the pics I took today barely scratch the surface here:
One of the members of our group, David “Odie” Redfield, is a retired naval aviator who served for 20 years with distinction, having flown all three variants of the F-14 Tomcat during his service. Seeing one at the museum brought tears of nostalgia to his eyes:
And, of course, my blog entry just wouldn’t be complete without the video from today’s ride. I’m really happy with how this video came out, so if you haven’t watched it yet, be sure to check it out:
That’s all for today! Tomorrow we continue on to Dodge City. Looks to be a challenging one - about 84 miles, with just over 1,000 feet of climbing, but the forecast once again calls for a strong gusty headwind. See you tomorrow!
